Why I Believe the Law of Attraction Can Do More Harm Than Good: A Spiritual Psychotherapist's Perspective

The Law of Attraction (LOA) is a hot topic and we’ve heard many success stories with it. But I have to be honest: I’ve hesitated to fully subscribe to its principles and felt conflicted about it. As a trauma survivor and a spiritual psychotherapist, I see the risk in how LOA can deepen shame and imply victim-blaming. Here’s what I mean:

Has the LOA ever made you think or feel this way?

  • “I experience trauma because my energy attracts it.” 👉 Wait, so I deserve this? I have no one to blame but myself?

  • “Difficult things happen because I’m stronger than it, or my Higher Self chose this for me to grow.”👉Hello? Did my human self consent to this?

  • “I can’t think negative thoughts or feel negative feelings; otherwise, I’ll attract bad things.”👉Talk about toxic positivity—this just adds to more shame.

Despite its popularity, I struggle to agree with these ideas. While I believe New Age concepts stem from kind intentions, they can be misused or even abused—to manipulate or shame—as seen in extreme cases like cults.

A Balanced Perspective

I am sure LOA is helpful for some, and maybe it’s helpful down the road (when you are out of the active pain and is reflecting or meaning-making on past struggles), but it’s not helpful (and even harmful) when you’re actively in pain, particularly as trauma survivors, as these messages can feel more harmful than healing.

I’m not rejecting LOA entirely; I see its place in healing and personal growth. But it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution (even though it is so-called the “Law”). Context matters. How these messages are delivered matters. When they’re shared matters. The stage of healing you’re in makes a difference in how these messages land.

Law of Attraction has its place in healing and personal growth. But it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Context matters.

Stay Grounded

Even if a teacher, a guru, a therapist, someone authoritative tells you something, take it with a grain of salt. Be open to different ideas—learn about them and be inspired even—but also be discerning. Always stay anchored in yourself when you explore different concepts/teachings. Consciously integrate only what feels aligned with your journey.

Your Feelings Matter

Notice how these teachings make you feel. If they don’t empower you or make you feel bad about yourself, let them go. Take in what supports your healing and goals, and leave the rest behind.

The truth for others doesn’t have to be your truth. You get to decide.

Ultimately, you’re the one in the driver’s seat. What would YOU like to bring with you on your journey?
